Spring is officially two weeks away!! Decluttering my home is one of the ways I prepare for the incoming warmer season. I'm far from the most organized person, but I can't stand having junk we don't use taking up space. Two years ago, I read The Life-changing Principles of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo and have been trying to abide by those principles ever since. I'd recommend the book to anyone as I found her method to be efficient. As a person who has anxiety, I've found that it helps tremendously to have a clean space. I believe this also applies to anyone as it's just one less thing to worry about.
After I read Marie Kondo's book, I got rid of five garbage bags of trash! This is particularly impressive considering I lived in a small two bed room apartment with my best friend. I went through each part of my living space (closet, dresser, bathroom cabinet), looked at every single item, and thought about whether they "sparked joy" and if I was going to wear or use them in the next 6 months. If the answer was no, I got rid of it. See ya trinkets! Depending on the size of your space this process can take a weekend or up to a week to complete. I recommended that you do it all at once so you don't get sidetracked, and I promise you'll feel 1000 times better when you are left with the items you only truly love and need! I now try to do this with my wardrobe and beauty products specifically every six months so my place doesn't get out of control! The book has a lot of organizing techniques (TMI I fold my underwear) but I thought this part was the most vaulauble.
After you rid your home of the unwanted items, you can get into the nitty gritty. I specifically focus on cleaning things that normally we forget about when doing our usual cleaning.
- Dust ceiling fans
- Clean under the sinks
- Clean inside & outside of toilets
- Wash faucets
- Clean windows
- Clean dishwasher
- Clean oven
- Wipe down appliances
- Clean inside microwave
- Sweep the fridge for expired food/condiments
- Clean fridge shelves and compartments
- Move bed/couch/other furniture and sweep or vacuum underneath
- Wipe down matress
- And I always love fresh sheets so wash those too!
Obviously, there are a lot more things that could go on this list, but these are the most important to me. Now I'm not going to be the person to say that cleaning is fun; however, a weekend without being hungover is fun - blasting your favorite music all day is fun, taking ice cream breaks is fun, grabbing fresh flowers is fun, and not living in a trash can is fun! So before Spring & Summer get wild and take up your schedules, take a weekend to reset and organize your space!
